Long Table Dining Series
It started with months of talk about our favorite meals - meals with family
and friends, memorable meals at home and while traveling. We always
talk about food and wine, but these conversations all came back to
the energy created when you share a meal with those that enjoy it as much as
you do. Thus the Prima Strada Long Table Dinner was born. It’s a long table
full of food, wine, fun and great conversation (between bites).
Each month we focus on a different region of Italy to create a delicious menu
- Prima Strada's take on the classic dishes of the region. The meal
is typically 4 courses with paired wines - one part dinner party, one part Italian
wine club served up with a healthy dose of laughter.

This month's long table: Lombardia
While snow in Victoria is a distant memory, in Lombardia the weather
is cool and the slopes of Switzerland beckon. The capital, Milano, is
known as the center of Italian commerce - finance, fashion and automotive
to name a few. But don't overlook the cultural - home to Da Vinci's The
Last Supper, birthplace of Giuseppe Verde and Teatro alla Scala. Milano
has many gems be it shopping, food or a visit to the Duomo. Out of the
city, travellers seek the lake region. A recognizible backdrop from your
favorite book or movie, home many a celebrity, Lake Como has been a retreat
since Roman times.
For us, it's about the food and wine - more rice and polenta than pasta
and more butter than olive oil are consumed in the region. The butter
and cheese are often attributed to the proximity of neighboring Switzerland.
Meals often end with the popular regional cheeses: crescenza, robiole,
mascarpone, gorgonzola, taleggio, grana lodigiano and belpaese. In contrast
to most of Italy, the wine industy of Lombardia is in its adolescence.
Varieties like pinot nero (noir) and chardonnay are being vinified into
modern wines reliant on hundred-year old winemaking traditions.
The Food
Insalata di breasola e rucola - salad of Breasola &
arugula, Risotta alla Millanese - saffron & bone marrow
risotto, Cotolette alla Milanese veal cutlets Milan style
- breaded & fried in butter, Creama di Marscapone - marscapone
cream with shortbread biscuts
The Wine
Pinot Nero Brut, Tenuta Scarpa Colombi - Lombardia is
becoming increasingly well known for it sparkling wine made in the classic
method Champenoise. This classy bottle fermented sparkler is made using
100% pinot noir. Pinot Nero, Ca'di Frara - this cool-climate
pinot is sleek and polished with vibrant cherry and spicy cedar notes.
Bonarda Piacere, Tenuta Bofenisio - the most classical
DOC of Oltrepo Pavese. Red fruit with fragrant violet notes match perfectly
with the classically rich Lombardian cuisine.
